No matter who the hero or his stature he/she will at some point reach the limits of his living environment. This is a situation where he is bored and longs to see new things or where he is simply exhausted the possibilities of his current way of living. This is typicaly when the hero is "called" to adventure. For most of us this probably happens the first time we move away from home or go off to college. The world we lived in for the first 20 years of our lives has grown to comfortable and predictable and we need to be cut open by a new experience to discover the joy of living once again and grow. The call can take many forms but in fairy tales it is often in an unfamiliar or scary form.
Eventually even if the call is not answered the hero may be pressed into action by cicumstances beyond his control.
Here is a classic tale to read: The Frog Prince
The classic tale of Daphne and Apollo also highlights the Call to Adventure and the Refusal of the Call:

I think there comes a time in everyones life when things get boring. After so many years, men and women find themselves in a midlife crisist vand usually pulling stunts they probably would have pulled when they were young. They feel that by stirring things up, they can become young again.
ReplyDeleteTo me, I am often changing my ways and actions to satisfy my never ending obessession with change and adventure. Though during the last year I found myself depending on my parents too much. This caused me to not take my first semester of college very seriously. I failed out of nursing due to the fact that I hated it. After, I went into somewhat of a deep depression. I found myself going through the motions of life without realizing what was really going on or taking any of it in. It was as if I was a zombie. I lost all direction in life at that point. My friends started noticing more and more was going wrong with me. They tried getting me out of the house as much as possible. They're goal was not easily accomplished. The times the did get me to go out, I really did not care about the latest gossip, and I really took no interest in conversation. One friend suprised me by picking me up out of bed one evening and picking out an outfit and telling me to get ready and that she needed me to go out with her for a double date. I grumpily tried to ignore her and tell herit was not happening, unfortunately I gave in. When we arrived I couldn't help but take interest in the one who was waiting for me. That night I decided to take my first journey, my adventure in love. We have been together ever since. I love it and i love him. I find that he put breathed life back into me, and everyone noticed it. We challenge each other every day and it never gets boring!!
It still amazes me that while talking about mythology, we can watch star wars movies to learn information. By using these techniques, it makes learning information for a course a lot more enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteI found the stories very interesting. My favorite is "The Frog Prince," which definitely is a classic. I guess I never really thought of it as a hero tale, but It's weird once we start mixing greek mythology with the childhood stories. It makes it a lot easier to learn about mythology.
I take such joy in seeing children's movies. They are supposed to be for children yet many end up having hidden meanings. These hidden meanings we find go back to mythology every time. We find in the frog prince that there was a true hero --- really the princess who rescued the frog then in turn he rescued her. So they were both heroes of some sorts. We see heroes in mythology which may have lay the great foundations for even childrens classics like the frog prince.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story Lindsey. All of us become prisoners of our own routines and limitations some times. We are lucky if we have a friend who cares enough about us to force us to face the call to adventure.
